Notable past players

Jürgen Klinsmann named Mark van Bommel captain for the 2008–09 season, succeeding former captain Oliver Kahn, who had retired after the 2007–08 season. Van Bommel was the first non-German captain of Bayern Munich. The Dutchman had been the Reds' captain since 2008. In January 2011 he left for Milan, though. The former vice-captain, Philipp Lahm, succeeded him as captain. Bastian Schweinsteiger who was formerly the second vice-captain is now the only vice-captain.
